Why do landlords always say "No Pets"?

I don't take a place unless it says pets are ok. I mean, I think landlords can be unreasonable about this. Thats why there are so many animals in the shelter, because most renters cannot adopt a pet. Whats your opinion? Is it the landlord's carpet, wall and interior?
