Gamecube or Melee. WHich is Broken?

I have an older gamecube. Me and my friend have been through 3 used copies of the game used and the first two wouldnt get past the main menu but they had some damage. The third one is a little damaged but ive played with worse. Every other game I have works flawlessly. Is it the Gamecube or the game?
